Bad players are consumed by variance
Mediocre players try to ignore it
The greats use it.

A pretty cool opportunity

3 years ago at 11:06 pm

Since black friday, I haven't had the chance to do too much thinking about poker, since I haven't really been able to play any poker. This Monday, though, I have the opportunity to guest lecture for one of my professors in his Science of Poker class. Dr. Bob Hannum is one of my poker heroes; he hasn't won any bracelets, and his interest in the game is more academic than monetary, but he's been at the forefront of the legal battle for poker as an expert witness since the UIGEA passed. He's the man responsible for getting the Colorado courts to declare poker a game of skill, and I'm honored to be working with him.

On Monday I'll be lecturing for a couple hours on the power of position and simple hand range analysis, as well as some other miscellaneous things that I think will benefit the beginning poker players with a desire to learn. To help me out with this, I ask this of PS:

If you could have been told ONE thing when you began playing, what would it be? I'm looking for serious answers, so please guys, save your wittiness for another blog post.

Thanks & ,
Contra

I just gave the lecture, and it went super well... I got some good questions, and tailored it mostly to position since that's what you guys mentioned the most. It was really cool to be talking in front of people who legitimately wanted to learn, though there were a couple of chinese girls who probably didn't understand a word I said. All in all, it's been a good day. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Cards beat chips, chips beat position and position beats cards. If I could have been told that a decade ago I would be a very happy player. Also if someone would have told me that making the final table was probably the best tournament book published before the turn of the decade that would have been helpful too.

Thanks for the help guys, I think I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to talk about now. The main topics (hand ranging and position) are applicable to both live and online, cash games and tournaments on purpose. I'll point out differences here and there, but it will be a mostly general poker lecture.

As to Vegas, dunno if I'll be able to meet up with you guys :/ I get in 4pm Fri, then concert goes 8pm - 6am Fri, Sat, Sun, and then I leave early tues morning. There will be other times... it's not like I can stay away from vegas for long.

I think OD hit it on the head. Position, odds, stack size,in T play. BRM for both cash and Ts. I didn't have to be taught that tho.

Wish I could remember the whole joke about 2kids learning toplay. It is a great story about any 2 can win and you never know.

You should video this class, if possible, and post it.

PS: Hope you can make it down to the Live OFC and meet up with us. Even if you can't play, you can bring your friends and come party with us. GoldDiggers on Tuesday nite and pub crawl on Fri nite.
