My "pro" career crusher

So here's my bad beat story that crushed my push to build a bankroll big enough to play "pro"

Harrah's Metropolis Casino is my home poker room. We play $2-5 NL Holdem. I decided to take a stab at a "pro" or "semi-pro" career by play 4-6 hours a day here. Now granted, I only had a grand to start with, so I was behind before I got there, but I was confindent I could make something happen. I started out great. First 2 nights I bought in for 500 and cashed out 1000, doubling my bankroll. After some grinding sessions, a near miss in the weekly tournament (thats another bad beat story for another day), and a couple hundred going down the toilet to the quarter slots while waiting for my seat in the poker room, I was still above water, but needing to have a good night or two to get back on track. Well, I was running good! Making the right calls, laying down "big" hands I knew where beat, collecting chips and on my way to a successful, bankroll-building night when I look down at AQ off. I make a standard $30 raise in middle position and get 2 callers. I am utg after the flop, which comes A K 9 rainbow, and raise $65. The player to my left ponders, then calls, and the other player folds. The turn is Q, making my two-pair. I raise to $100 with about 780 left in front of me. The other player re-raises $200 on top. I've played with this guy all day, and he has come over the top of my pots over and over with little or nothing, showing me his garbage hands everytime. Now, I don't believe he has nothing here, but I cannot have predicted the following sequence. I take probably 10 minutes to decide what I'm going to do here and I come to the conclussion that he has one of four hands here: A10, AJ, 10-10, or 9-9, 9-9 being the only hand that has me beat in this situation, so I push. 480 more on top of his bet, which was about 90 more than he had in front of him. He INSTACALLS me with QQ!!! He caught the case Q on the turn to crush 2 pair, leaving me with 90 in front of me after having been ahead nearly 500 ahead for the day. I rebought for another 500 immediately, only to have AA beat by KK buy a K coming on the turn, with all of my chips already in the pot a couple hours later. So, my roll went from having doubled, to gone, from basically 2 hands! It took me a couple weeks to build it and a few hours to loose it... gotta love this game! LOL

Now trust me when I say, I did not believe he was holding garbage here. But QQ was not even fathomable as I held AQ and the board read A K 9 Q. I couldn't have possible put him on AA or KK, so logically speaking, he HAD to have had AJ or A10, and possibly 99. But why on gods green would he have called the $65 bet on the flop with QQ and an A K 9 flop that was raised pre-flop?

I still get sick thinking about this hand, lol

Maybe he was looking to hit a runner runner for a str8 or just being retarded coz his got money to spend.

But then in a game of Poker anything can happen...;)

I see where your coming from though.Tough luck man...

This is a great example of playing outside of your bankroll. Sorry for your luck but you definitley shoulnt buyin any cashgame with half your roll or even a quarter. With so much variance in poker its way to risky. Sorry for your loss and better luck next time bro. Good bankroll management is key to longevity in poker. A good percent for cashgames isabout 5% of your roll and fortournaments2% is good, and if you ever double or tripple what you've bought in for its time to leave the table. No matter what. Trust me, these methods work and have been proven time and time again by Pro's and Amateurs alike. Good Luck at the tables!!!

You are completely right, but unfortunately there isn't a game in my area for any lower stakes. AT ALL. I could've took it online and played $0.10/0.25 but I prefer the live game, and honestly I believed (and still do to tell you the truth) that I can beat the 2/5 NL game at my home casino. I just don't have the roll to do it right now, so I've decided to take it down a notch, hit the virtual felt for some much lower stakes and grind my way back to roll big enough to try it all again. We'll see what happens right?
