Anyone into sports betting?

For Europeans, betfair kicks ass - I seem to make $10 or so on most major golf/ tennis events and various other markets (bet on 1000-1 shots and lay off bets when odds drop- that way minimal risk)

Wimbledon wasnt going well, but luckily had stuck 3 quid on Safin at 740-1 and laid it off 400-1 (2), 210-1 (4), and 60-1 (8), which covered all my bets and made me a few quid.

Tennis- Monfils, Matheau, Youhzny, Verdasco, Hewitt (dumb Aussies will back him after 2 rounds at 100-1!) and Safin are my favourites..

Used to do a lot of betting during soccer matches, but can get totally manic and out of control (plus you hardly watch most of the matches!)

Betting 'in play' in rugby matches (back losing side and lay it off quickly) seems to work well to

Anyone tried any of above?

Betfair is similar to poker- there's just as much skill involved as luck (if not more so)

You bet against other punters, not against a bookmaker, so get much better odds generally

Poker site is truly awful though...

Can't believe noone bets on sports apart from dollar and I!

Here's a tip for you- Portsmouth to win the premiership (english soccer) at 440-1

Now anyone who know anything about soccer will laugh, but I know they have no chance..

However they won the FA cup last year, they have a great defence, the best goalkeeper and some decent strikers (bought Peter Crouch recently) and rumoured to be buying Sean Wright-Phillips...

I'm an Everton fan and would prefer Portsmouth's team (Everton are 380-1)

I'd say Portsmouth have a great chance at finishing equal with Tottenham (85-1) or Aston Villa (230-1)

The point is the odds are stupid/ wrong - bookmakers would give you about 100-1 or 200-1 max

If they win their first 3 games the odds will be 200-1 max (lay of half your bet so you have stake back)- I'd say lay bet off by mid-season and with any luck you'll make some easy cash....

If they have a disatrous start to season, wait for a few wins and the odds will almost certainly still be about 400-1. You can then close off your bet at no profit/ loss.....

I'm betting on them at 440-1 or above and trying to lay off at 400-1, will keep doing this until season starts and then leave 3 quid ($6) on them to lay off later in the season and am confident they'll do well/ odds will come down.

Disclaimer- these things can go wrong, so dont blame me if it does! (but still think it's a great bet)
