I think that poker is all skill, but you are going to need to be "Running good" in order to have a strong finish in a 5000 person $1 MTT Rebuy/Addon. As already posted you are going to have bad sessions on the regular basis. Also, it depends what you consider "Lucky." Do you think somebody pushing a flush draw with a pair against your set, and them hitting lucky? Or pair vs pair and the lower wins? I think poker is 80% skill 20% pot control :) (NL HOLDEM) |

I see many at this site use the word donkey allot, the definition on a donkey are very simple its a bad player. A donkey can be a player that is way to agresiv or a donkey can be a player that is to weak it can altso be a caling station etc. So when use the word donkey actually best is to descibe what kind of donkey. When it comes to the orginale question, agree whit u danutz. (-: |

what bothers me about most people saying it is luck....the most common quote out of players mouth is "you got lucky" but, what most unskilled poker players fail to look at, is the odds the other player has in drawing out their hand, thats not luck thats playing the odds that your card will hit. people are under the assumption that if a player calls a hand that they are behind in that they made a donkey call thats not true next time calculate the number of outs that player had and he may not have made a bad call..eventho, you may be upset that they drawed out on your AK two pair with their QJ spades, when As,Ks,9d comes on the flop if you look at this flop an average player would think it would be stupid for someone to call this hand with QsJs but if you calculate the number of outs, they are not so stupid or lucky, they have good odds 9 spades and 4 10s that is 13 outs, thats pretty good odds...So next time you feel someone made a stupid call and drawed out on you calculate their outs maybe they are not so lucky but skilled...Maybe your the unskilled player for not seeing the number of cards that could beat your hand!!!!!!!!! |

go to lessons it will explain it more in debt but a quick example (u have QJ of spades and Ks 10s 9d hit the flop u have to look at it as no one has ur outs u have 9 spades four 8s and four As that can come on the turn and river that gives u 17 outs to catch ur hand u can also add ur QJ which gives u 6 more outs but not the nuts a total of 23 outs |

honestly it really depends on the games you constantly play, if your playing all equally skilled players luck may actually count more but skill in most games is what its all about long term |

well, for a donkey i think its luck. but for some one that knows what they doing its skill. u have donks out there that are constantly pushing their stack and playing bingo with it. there is no skill in that |

After reading through this forum, its safe to say that everyone agrees that there are different playing styles. But in the end, if you want to win and make money, like the pros do, you better have some skills at the table. I see so many people trying to simply push people out of pots lately, raising every single hand and it disgustes me. But I know that even though their strategy might work for a few hands, they will most likely be busted because they will fall into a trap. Its just like Matt Damon says, its a game of skill! |

Over a long period of time, luck doesnt even come into play. |

This conversation brings to mind one of my favorite quotes, "Most of the money you'll win at poker comes not from the brilliance of your own play, but from the ineptitude of your opponents".There is no point in fixing something if it isn't broke, Danutz said it perfectly there is nothing I can say that he hasn't. It is only the donkeys that blame their loosing streak on "luck"a true champion sucks it up and plays regardless. Naturally you cannot control how the cards fall, but you can control how you play in response to that. |
