Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Poker in Canada 2012
When thinking of a top poker destination, one usually does not immediately consider Canada. You might be surprised to learn that Canada is one of the world's most open and liberal countries when it comes to gambling, certainly more so than their neighbor to the south. Unlike in the U.S. where most states have a minimum gambling age of 21, in many provinces in Canada one can enter and play poker in a casino as early as 18 or 19 years of age.
Legality of Poker and Online Poker
The very concept of gambling is one that Canada's legal code is very tolerant of. In 1970 laws were put into place to give Canada's provinces the right to license and regulate gambling, and now each province has their own licensed casinos. Canada has also been accommodating towards the online poker craze since its very inception. Here's something you probably didn't know: the Kahnawake Gaming Commission in Quebec has been licensing online gaming sites since 1999! Everyone knows that in the U.S., by contrast, online poker is still a big no-no. As a matter of fact, many former online poker grinders from the U.S. moved to Canada after Black Friday so that they could keep on playing.
Canadian Casinos with Live Poker
You might be surprised to learn that the fundamental aesthetics of many Canadian casinos are superior to what one might find in Las Vegas. Sure the Vegas Strip is one-of-a-kind, but how can it compare to a place like Fallsview Casino Resort, built to overlook Niagara Falls? Sporting 3,000 slots, 142 table games, and an impressive array of poker options, Fallsview is certainly a "must visit" for anyone planning to play poker in Canada. Another great destination to continue your Canadian poker tour would be Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino in Ontario. Situated right near the Ambassador Bridge, their poker room spreads the full range of games with limits starting as low as $1/$2 (or "a loonie and a toonie" as a local might say.
If size is what matters most to you, however, the Casino de Montreal in Quebec is where you should head, as it's one of the largest casinos in the world. It offers a full five floors of gaming action and its poker room offers enough variety to entertain a wide range of players. They stage daily tournaments and feature 18 cash game tables with promotions including "High Hand of the Day".

Famous Canadian Poker Players
Another way that Canada has distinguished itself in the poker world is via the plethora of professional players to make names for themselves and for their country. In fact, when looking at a list of the top 100 all-time money winners in poker, the only country that has more representatives than Canada is the United States.
Time and again, big names like 4-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu and 2010 WSOP Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel rise up with stellar tournament poker performances.
Daniel Negreanu

Negreanu, otherwise known as "Kid Poker", is truly in a league of his own. He first established himself in 1997 (when he was in his early twenties), winning two premier events, and followed that up with his first WSOP bracelet win in 1998 in the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold'em event. Arguably, Negreanu's biggest achievement came in 2004 when he was named "Player of the Year" both at the World Series of Poker and by Cardplayer magazine.
Regarding his skills at the felt, he's particularly well known for his gift of gab, often being able to talk out a hand against until he manages to guess the cards his opponent is holding. To date Daniel Negreanu has managed to win over $16.5 million. The proud Torontonian can often be seen at live poker events wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs NHL jersey and is the face of the world's largest online poker site.
Jonathan Duhamel

A lesser, but by no means any less Canadian, poker celebrity in the Great White North is Jonathan Duhamel, who became the first Canadian to ever win top prize at the WSOP. Since his landmark 2010 win, Duhamel has firmly entrenched himself among the game's top players, recording excellent results and winning loads of money at top tier poker tournament series events like the PCA and EPT. He's earned the tidy sum of over $11 million at the felt.
Other well known Canadian pros
Several Canadian faces have graced the WSOP Main Event Final Table over the years. For instance, 2008 witnessed two Canadian contenders in Darus Suharto and Scott Montgomery. Suharto was eliminated in 6th place, but Montgomery's 5th place elimination was far more memorable for all the "wrong" reasons. Having started the final table with the third-largest chip stack, Montgomery got busted by a Peter Eastgate two outer, as that year's eventual Main Event winner was able to spike a 6 on the river.
Poker's Got Quite the Mainstream Following in Canada
It is fair to say that the impact Canada has had on poker is far greater than that of other countries. The country's distinguished players and casinos surely have a lot to do with that, but the passion that "plain old" Canadian poker fans have for the game is what's truly incredible to behold. It's not at all uncommon to witness Canadians following and cheering on their favorite players as each strives to make a new mark for Canada on the poker world. In practically all Canadian casinos one can find copies of Canadian Poker Player Magazine, an initiative of HeadsUp Entertainment International Inc. The magazine gives up-to-date reports and articles about notable Canadian players and events across the country that locals simply gobble up with each new issue. In case you're interested in checking it out, the magazine is available for free online.
So before you head on over to one of the more well-known poker hubslike Las Vegas or Atlantic City, it might be worth casting your eyes a bit higher up for some great poker "north of the border" or give it a try playing any of the flash poker games online available as a warm up. We can assure you that the experience will be one you remember for the rest of your life.
